When Sex Is Traumatic

Assistance for Traumatic Sexual Experiences

This research examines the causes and indicators of sexual trauma in newlywed couples.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) impacts 20% of women and 8% of men. Additionally, those with a history of early CSA are more likely to face sexual assault in adulthood compared to those without such a history. Women reported being sexually assaulted by strangers (16.7%), acquaintances (21%), non-spouse relatives (6.5%), and intimate partners (61.9%). The study's findings indicated that for women, but not men, sexual revictimization (a partner using threats to obtain sex or being coerced into sex without a condom) may occur in a new marriage and these experiences are linked to heightened trauma symptoms. Trauma symptoms include intrusive thoughts or dreams, defensive avoidance, dissociation, impaired self-reference, and dysphoria (depressed mood).

Everyone faces various challenges in life, but sometimes you might feel that your problems are more severe than typical concerns or the Monday blues. If you are experiencing a tough period and conventional advice doesn't seem to help, it might be time to consider seeing a therapist or speaking with your General Practitioner.
